Batman fans have been waiting a long time for the Batman 1960ies DVD from the popular TV series. The Batman series ran on television for two and a half seasons beginning on January 12, 1966 and ending on March 14, 1968. During that period the series aired two regular episodes per week in primetime on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Batman was played by Adam West and Robin by Burt Ward in this series where the characters were based on the DC comics. In a short period of time 120 episodes were aired. It normally takes 5 years to air 120 episodes.
Each episode would typically start off in the same fashion. One of the reoccurring villains would be up to no good either stealing a precious gem or holding Gotham City in dire straits. The scene would then change to Commissioner Gordon's office where he and Chief O'Hara would be considering their options. In the end the Commissioner would always press the secret button, which allowed him access to the red Bat phone and he would call Bruce Wayne, alias Batman.
The scene would then change to Wayne Manor the home of the cape crusading Billionaire Bruce Wayne where his loyal butler Alfred would answer the call. He would pass the call onto Bruce and then Bruce and Dick, alias Robin, would ponder their next move. At this point Bruce would push a hidden button in the bust of Shakespeare, which caused the bookcase to slide open revealing the Bat Poles. Bruce would then say to his sidekick Robin "To the Bat Poles", and they would be off and down the poles where they wound up amazingly in their famous costumes in the Bat Cave. At this point the introductory animated title sequence usually kicked in.
By today's standards the Batman series was perhaps a little too weak but the series was very popular. The recent movies have portrayed the Batman character closer to the dark character created in the DC comics. Even though the series seems cheesy today there is just something special about the persona of Batman. The series created some memorable villainous characters that still linger in our memories today.
